Memory sticks are a simple but engaging craft activity thats perfect for a holiday. They appeal to kids who like to make as well as draw and helps children practice important motor skills.
A memory stick can be made with any old stick, string & materials. Essentially you use some sort of twine to attach significant items to a stick. What I love about this combination of materials is that it encourages drawing and writing. Each little card can be filled quickly with simple drawings, notes, stickers, stamping or sketches. In addition to that the hole punching, wrapping and tying is all great for motor skill development. The colours are joyful and its a gorgeous way to record a moment in time. You can attach tickets, natural finds, postcards, photos, envelopes, other strings and ribbons - it'll all add to the memory! Its a bit like a 3 dimensional sketchbook. Kids and grown ups loved this activity when Jo ran it for the Hepworth Wakefield back in 2019, during the Sculpture Prize exhibition!
